Idaho Tire Inspection Sensors at Ports

Heads up, Idaho owner-operators (or anyone passing through Idaho ports of entry)! The Idaho Transportation Department board has approved a Tire Anomaly and Classification System at Idaho's ports of entry.

According to an article by Transport Topics, the new safety installation is due to the identification of more than 1,100 tire anomalies since the first TAC system was installed in February.

The new system will screen semi-truck tires for damage and allow port employees to use the data to notify drivers before bigger problems occur.

Tire safety is extremely important for all owner-operators to be vigilant about. Ignoring basic tire checks can be dangerous for yourself and other drivers on the road.

Here are some things the TAC system will catch:

  • Underinflation of tires (the number one reason tires will blow out or wear out)
  • Missing tires
  • Blown out tires
  • Mismatched tread depths/sizes

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration is conducting a project to evaluate the efficacy of Tire Safety Screening Systems in identifying potential tire violations. According to the FMCSA, ORNL will collect inspection data along with supplemental data from partnering States to statistically determine if TS3s provide an increased rate of tire violations compared to not having the system at all.

This means that Tire Inspection Sensors could expand to other states in addition to Idaho.

Make sure you're following recommended safety guidelines for your vehicle. Even if something seems tedious or time consuming, taking a few minutes to ensure your tires meet safety standards is always worth the time.
